what Pete Bethune was saying before the Ady Gil was rammed by the Security vessel Shonan Maru # 2, 2 days later she sunk “Do you want to reach in and tell them to stop now?” Capt Bethune says. The vessel then appears to drift. Low on fuel, Bethune, de Groot and crewman Mike Smith wave goodbye to another Sea Shepherd vessel, the Bob Barker. “Well team, f…ing good effort guys, what a good day,” Bethune says after a day of clashes with the whaling fleet. “Shame we haven’t got a couple of thousand more litres of fuel to go. What a massive day, massive. Good team effort, not an easy day though.” Two minutes into the video, the long-range acoustic device aboard the Shonan Maru 2 can be heard. The trio watches unconcerned and takes photographs as the ship approaches and appears to turn towards them with its water cannons aimed at the Ady Gil. Seconds before the collision the men start yelling. The footage ends a split second before the impact as the cameraman scrambles clear. Six crew crewmembers, four from New Zealand, one from Australia, and one from the Netherlands were immediately rescued by the crew of the Sea Shepherd ship Bob Barker. None of the crew Ady Gil crew were injured. The Ady Gil is believed to be sinking and chances of salvage are very grim. According to eyewitness Captain Chuck Swift on the Bob Barker, the attack happened while the vessels were dead in the water. The Shonan Maru No. 2 suddenly started up and deliberately rammed the Ady Gil ripping eight feet of the bow of the vessel completely off. According to Captain Swift, the vessel does not look like it will be saved. The Japanese whalers have now escalated this conflict very violently, said Captain Paul Watson. If they think that our remaining two ships will retreat from the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in the face of their extremism, they will be mistaken. We now have a real whale war on our hands now and we have no intention of retreating. Captain Paul Watson onboard the Steve Irwin is racing towards the area at 16 knots but still remains some five hundred miles to the north. The Bob Barker has temporarily stopped the pursuit of the Nisshin …

Sea Shepherd Steve Irwin and Bob Barker footage in Hobart

Australian Federal Police Return Sea Shepherds Logbooks No Charges and All Crew are Free to Go Where They Wish On March 11, the Australian Federal police returned the logbooks for the Steve Irwin and the Bob Barker. No arrests have been made following the raid on the two ships based on a request by the Japanese government. Sea Shepherd expects no arrests. The Australian Federal Police boarded the Steve Irwin last year when the ship returned from defending the whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Nothing was heard of that boarding afterwards, and Sea Shepherd is not expecting to hear anything concerning the most recent boarding. The police are obligated to act on the Japanese request, but I dont think the Australian Federal Police feel there is sufficient evidence to make any arrests, said Captain Paul Watson. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society would actually welcome any arrests and the opportunity to take this entire issue before the courts. It would be an opportunity to expose a great deal about Japanese illegal whaling operations in the Southern Oceans. It would also be a legal nightmare. Four different flags represent the ships involved. The Japanese have their own flag, and Sea Shepherd had ships registered in the Netherlands (Steve Irwin), Togo (Bob Barker), and New Zealand (Ady Gil). The crews of the Sea Shepherd ships represent 18 different nationalities. The incidents took place in the Australian Antarctic Territorial waters and in international waters …
